Formal Register and Opening/Closing Formulas
Writing a formal letter in Spanish requires a formal register and codified formulas. Here are the essential conventions.
Opening Formulas
- Estimado/a Sr./Sra. + name: the most common
- Muy señor/a mío/a: very formal (institutions)
- A quien corresponda: when the recipient is unknown
Body of the Letter
Always use usted (not tú). Common verbs:
- Me dirijo a usted para... (I am writing to you to...)
- Le escribo en relación con... (I am writing regarding...)
- Desearía solicitar... (I would like to request...)
Closing Formulas
- Atentamente: standard
- Le saluda atentamente: more formal
- Quedo a la espera de su respuesta: requesting a reply
- Sin otro particular, le saluda cordialmente: to conclude
Common Mistakes
- Do not mix tú and usted in the same letter
- Do not use Querido/a (dear) which is informal
- Always include the subject (Asunto:) at the top of the letter

Erros frequentes
Querida Sra. García, te escribo para pedir información.Estimada Sra. García, le escribo para solicitar información.In a formal letter, use Estimado/a (not Querido/a) and usted (le/le escribo, not te escribo). Solicitar is preferred over pedir.
Le escribo para que me da información sobre los cursos.Le escribo para que me dé información sobre los cursos.After para que, the subjunctive (dé) is required, not the indicative (da).
Adjunto mi CV. Espero tu respuesta.Adjunto mi CV. Quedo a la espera de su respuesta.In a formal context, use su (not tu) and the formula quedo a la espera de instead of the simple espero.
Le ruego que considera mi solicitud.Le ruego que considere mi solicitud.After le ruego que, the subjunctive (considere) is required, not the indicative (considera).
Me dirijo a ti para solicitar una beca.Me dirijo a usted para solicitar una beca.In a formal letter, always address with usted, never with tú/ti.
