Asking and Giving Names

Asking someone's name:

  • Informal: Как тебя зовут? — What's your name?
  • Formal: Как вас зовут? — What is your name?

Answering:

  • Меня зовут Иван. — My name is Ivan.
  • Literally: "Me they-call Ivan" — it's a fixed phrase, don't try to change it!

Subject pronouns in Russian:

  • я — I
  • ты — you (informal, singular)
  • он/она/оно — he/she/it
  • мы — we
  • вы — you (formal or plural)
  • они — they

Important: Russian has no equivalent of "a" or "the". Context tells you if it's definite or indefinite.

Asking about a third person:

  • Как его зовут? — What's his name?
  • Как её зовут? — What's her name?

Expressões

  • Как тебя зовут?Ask a friend or peer their name
  • Меня зовут...Introduce yourself by name
  • А тебя?And you? Ask back after introducing yourself
  • Как его/её зовут?Ask the name of a third person
  • Ты откуда?Ask informally where someone is from
  • Я из России.Say you are from Russia, change country as needed
  • Рад(а) познакомиться!Glad to meet you! рад for men рада for women

Erros frequentes

  • Что твоё имя?
    Как тебя зовут?

    Literal translation does not work in Russian, use the standard phrase

  • Рад познакомиться (woman speaking)
    Рада познакомиться

    The adjective must agree with the speaker's gender

  • Как его зовут? (about a woman)
    Как её зовут?

    Use её for female and его for male

  • Я зовут Анна.
    Меня зовут Анна.

    Меня is accusative of я, the verb requires this case

  • зо-ВУТ wrong stress
    зо-ВУТ correct

    The stress falls on the last syllable
