The Evolution of Portuguese

Portuguese descends from latim vulgar — the spoken Latin of Roman soldiers and settlers in Iberia — not from the literary Latin of Cicero. Through the medieval stage of galego-português (12th–14th centuries), the language gradually differentiated from Galician and developed its own identity.

Key evolução fonética changes shaped modern Portuguese: Latin pl-, cl-, fl- became ch- (PLENUM → cheio, CLAMARE → chamar, FLAMMAM → chama). The nasal vowels that make Portuguese so distinctive arose from the loss of intervocalic -n- (LUNAM → lua, BONAM → boa) with nasalisation preserved in words like lã (wool, from LANAM).

The acordo ortográfico of 1990 — still controversial in Portugal — attempted to unify Portuguese spelling across lusophone countries. It eliminated silent consonants (acto → ato, óptimo → ótimo) and standardised accent usage, though many Portuguese writers and institutions resist its adoption.

Neologismos enter Portuguese constantly: googlar (to google), tuitar (to tweet), while arcaísmos like outrossim (likewise) and destarte (in this way) survive in legal and literary registers. This tension between innovation and conservation defines the living language.
