How Portuguese Works: A Linguistic Overview

Understanding the mechanics of Portuguese at C2 level means seeing the language as a system. Portuguese morfologia is fusional — a single suffix like -mos in falamos simultaneously encodes person (1st), number (plural), tense (present), and mood (indicative).

Regência verbal is one of the trickiest areas. Verbs govern specific prepositions that often differ from other Romance languages: gostar de (to like), assistir a (to watch), obedecer a (to obey). These prepositions are lexically determined and cannot be predicted from meaning alone.

Portuguese concordância operates on multiple levels. Beyond subject-verb agreement, Portuguese requires agreement between nouns and adjectives in both gender and number, and even past participles agree when used with ser: As cartas foram escritas (The letters were written — feminine plural).

The sintagma nominal in Portuguese allows remarkable flexibility. Adjective placement changes meaning: um homem grande (a big man) vs. um grande homem (a great man). This pre-/post-nominal distinction is a powerful semantic tool unique to Romance languages.

Portuguese derivação creates vast word families from single roots: pedra → pedreiro (stonemason), pedregulho (pebble), apedrejar (to stone), empedrado (cobbled) — all from the Latin root for stone.

Erros frequentes

  • O professor explicou os alunos a matéria
O professor explicou aos alunos a matéria

'Explicar' requires the indirect object to be introduced by the preposition 'a': 'explicar algo a alguém'. The dative preposition cannot be omitted.

  • As casas foi pintadas de azul
As casas foram pintadas de azul

The verb 'ser' must agree in number with the subject 'casas' (plural): 'foram' not 'foi'. This is a basic concordância error.

  • Ele assistiu o jogo na televisão
Ele assistiu ao jogo na televisão

'Assistir' in the sense of 'to watch' requires the preposition 'a' in European Portuguese: 'assistir a algo'. Without the preposition, it means 'to assist/help'.

  • O Einstein foi um cientista grande.
O Einstein foi um grande cientista.

Grande before a noun means great/remarkable; after it means physically big — this wrongly calls him large, not brilliant.

  • A derivação de 'pedra' inclui 'pedraria' e 'empedramento'
A derivação de 'pedra' inclui 'pedraria' e 'empedrado'

While 'empedramento' might seem logical, the correct derived form is 'empedrado' (cobbled surface). Not all derivational patterns are regular — some must be learned as lexical items.
