Accents and Dialects of Portuguese

Portuguese is spoken by over 250 million people across four continents, and its dialectal diversity is immense. Within Portugal alone, significant variation exists between northern, central, and southern falares regionais.

The sotaque of Porto (northern Portugal) is characterised by the open pronunciation of unstressed vowels — where Lisbon reduces e to a schwa [ə], Porto keeps it more open. The northern v/b merger (binho for vinho) is a well-known shibboleth, though it is receding among younger speakers.

The divide between português europeu and português brasileiro extends far beyond accent. Brazilian Portuguese uses você as the standard 2nd person form (with 3rd person verb conjugation), while European Portuguese maintains tu with 2nd person verb forms. Clitic placement differs systematically: BP favours proclisis (me diga) while EP uses enclisis (diga-me).

The lusofonia includes diverse varieties in Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé) where Portuguese developed distinct features through contact with local languages. Crioulos based on Portuguese emerged in Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and parts of Asia (Macau, East Timor), representing centuries of linguistic evolution through contact and creolisation.
