The Power of Words in Portuguese

Language does not merely describe reality — it shapes it. At C2 level, understanding the performativo dimension of language is essential: when a judge says Declaro-vos marido e mulher, the words themselves create a new legal reality. This is language as action.

Eufemismos soften harsh realities: Portuguese says falecer (to pass away) instead of morrer (to die), colaborador (collaborator) instead of empregado (employee), ajustamento (adjustment) instead of cortes (cuts). Conversely, disfemismos intensify: calling immigrants ilegais (illegals) rather than imigrantes em situação irregular (irregular-status immigrants) dehumanises through lexical choice.

Enquadramento determines perception. Describing the same event as intervenção militar (military intervention) versus invasão (invasion) fundamentally alters how it is understood. Portuguese political discourse is rich with such framing battles.

The carga conotativa of words extends beyond denotation. Povo (people/folk) carries connotations of solidarity and humility in Portuguese political tradition, while massa (mass) implies manipulation. A C2 speaker must recognise these layers and deploy them intentionally.

Linguagem inclusiva is an evolving debate in Portuguese, complicated by the language's grammatical gender system. Unlike English, Portuguese lacks a natural gender-neutral pronoun, making inclusivity a structural as well as social challenge.

Erros frequentes

  • O político fez uma falácia sobre a economia
O político cometeu uma falácia sobre a economia

One does not 'make' (fazer) a fallacy in Portuguese — one 'commits' (cometer) a fallacy. The collocation 'cometer uma falácia' is the correct form.

  • Ele usou um disfemismo para suavizar a situação
Ele usou um eufemismo para suavizar a situação

A dysphemism (disfemismo) makes something sound worse or harsher, not softer. To soften a situation, one uses a euphemism (eufemismo). These terms are opposites.
