Home Repairs – Modal Verbs and Necessity
When talking about home repairs in Polish, modal verbs express necessity, ability, and permission.
Key modals:
- trzeba (one needs to, impersonal): Trzeba naprawić kran. (The tap needs to be fixed.)
- musieć (must): Muszę wezwać hydraulika. (I must call the plumber.)
- móc (can/be able to): Czy możesz to naprawić? (Can you fix this?)
- warto (it is worth): Warto zainwestować w remont. (It is worth investing in the renovation.)
- należy (one should, formal): Należy wymienić instalację. (The wiring should be replaced.)
Note: trzeba and należy are impersonal – they have no subject and the following verb is infinitive.
- Trzeba naprawić + [infinitive] (It is necessary to fix...)

Erros frequentes

Muszę zadzwonić do hydraulik.Muszę zadzwonić do hydraulika.After 'do' use Genitive: hydraulik → hydraulika.
Remont będzie kosztuje dużo.Remont będzie kosztował dużo.Future tense of imperfective verbs: będzie + infinitive OR past tense form. 'Będzie kosztuje' is not a valid construction.
