Expressing Probability and Risk
Discussing the future of medicine requires grammar for expressing varying degrees of certainty, from strong conviction to cautious warnings about risks.
だろう expresses probability or supposition: 再生医療は多くの命を救うだろう (Regenerative medicine will probably save many lives). It is the most common pattern for future predictions.
に違いない expresses strong certainty, "must be" or "there is no doubt that": この治療法は革命的に違いない (This treatment must be revolutionary). Stronger than だろう, it conveys near-certainty.
かねない expresses a negative possibility, "could potentially" (something bad): 副作用が深刻な問題を引き起こしかねない (Side effects could potentially cause serious problems). It warns about undesirable outcomes.
おそれがある means "there is a risk/fear that": 遺伝子操作が倫理的問題を生むおそれがある (There is a risk that genetic manipulation will create ethical problems). More formal than かねない, it is common in academic and news contexts.
These patterns together allow nuanced discussion of medical advances, their promises, and their potential risks.
