Debating Politely in Japanese
Japanese culture values harmony, so polite debate requires careful language. Key B1 patterns:
〜のに (despite / although)
Expresses surprise or frustration that something is contrary to expectation.
(Although I practiced, I couldn't do it well.)
Softens a statement, making it less assertive.
(That might be correct.)
(It is said that)
Reports commonly held beliefs without taking personal responsibility.
(It is said that in Japan there is a lot of overtime.)
Softening Techniques
In polite debate, always soften your disagreement:
(That's true, but...)
(What you say is right, but...)
Expressões
Politely agree with what someone said
Acknowledge then introduce a counter-point
Soften disagreement with maybe but...
Admit the other person has a valid point
Cite common belief before challenging it
Preface a potentially rude statement
Erros frequentes
