.## Writing Professional Emails in Japanese
Japanese business emails use humble language (謙譲語) to lower yourself and elevate the recipient. This lesson covers three essential humble patterns.
謙譲語の基本 (basic humble language)
Humble verbs replace standard verbs when talking about your own actions to a superior.
- する → いたす: 確認(かくにん)いたします。 (I will check. — humble)
- 言(い)う → 申(もう)す: 田中(たなか)と申します。 (My name is Tanaka. — humble)
〜させていただきます (I will humbly do)
The most common humble form in business emails — expresses that you will do something with the other party's permission.
- 資料(しりょう)を送(おく)らせていただきます。 (I will humbly send the materials.)
- 明日(あした)ご連絡(れんらく)させていただきます。 (I will humbly contact you tomorrow.)
お/ご〜します (humble action form)
A humble pattern using お + verb stem + します or ご + noun + します.
- お送(おく)りします。 (I will send it to you. — humble)
- ご報告(ほうこく)します。 (I will report to you. — humble)
Expressões
- いつもお世話(せわ)になっております。Thank you for your continued support.
- 添付(てんぷ)ファイルをご確認(かくにん)いただけますか。Could you please check the attached file?
- ご返信(へんしん)をお待(ま)ちしております。I look forward to your reply. (humble)
- 資料(しりょう)を送(おく)らせていただきます。I will humbly send you the materials.
- 承知(しょうち)いたしました。Understood. (humble acknowledgment)
- お忙(いそが)しいところ恐(おそ)れ入(い)りますが。I apologize for bothering you when you are busy.
Erros frequentes
確認します。確認(かくにん)いたします。In business emails, use the humble form いたします instead of the plain polite します. This shows proper respect to the recipient.
資料を送ってもいいですか。資料(しりょう)を送(おく)らせていただきます。てもいいですか asks casual permission. させていただきます humbly states you will do something with their implied permission — standard in business.
返事を待っています。ご返信(へんしん)をお待(ま)ちしております。Use ご返信 (honorific) instead of 返事, and お待ちしております (humble progressive) instead of 待っています.
わかりました。承知(しょうち)いたしました。わかりました is polite but not humble enough for business emails. 承知いたしました is the humble business equivalent.
お送りいたします。お送(おく)りします。お〜します is already humble. Adding いたす creates double humility (お〜いたします), which while sometimes used, is considered excessive by many.
