.## Dealing with Neighbours in Japanese
Japanese neighbor relations require extreme politeness. This lesson covers advanced request forms and basic honorifics.
The most polite way to ask someone to do something — used with neighbors, landlords, etc.
(Would you perhaps be so kind as to lower the volume?)
(Could you possibly tell me the garbage days?)
〜と困ります (it would be a problem if)
A polite but firm way to express that something is bothering you.
(It is a problem if you make noise late at night.)
(It causes problems if garbage days aren't followed.)
Respectful forms used when speaking about or to neighbors, superiors.
(What time does the neighbor come home? — honorific)
(These are the rules the manager stated. — honorific)
Expressões
Could you lower the volume a little?

Could you tell me the garbage disposal rules?
Continued noise is a problem.

Erros frequentes
With neighbors, use the most polite form: てもらえないですか is too casual for neighbor requests.
Use passive される to soften the directness. Saying 出す directly accuses the neighbor, while 出される politely implies you are affected.
Use 方 (respectful: person) instead of 人 and いらっしゃる (honorific: to be/come) instead of いる when referring to neighbors.
Use さん after titles and おっしゃる (honorific: to say) instead of 言う when referring to the building manager respectfully.
Use the polite form 困ります when discussing rules with neighbors. The plain form 困る is too casual for this context.
