Advanced Narration in Italian
At B2 level, Italian fiction requires mastery of sophisticated narrative techniques: tense alternation, dialogue, description and pace management.
1. Imperfetto / Passato remoto alternation
The passato remoto (simple past) marks key actions, events that move the plot forward. The imperfetto (imperfect) describes the setting, states, and background actions.
— It was a dark and stormy night when someone knocked at the door.
- Le strade erano deserte (imperfetto), le luci sembravano occhi (imperfetto). All''improvviso, un''ombra attraversò il corridoio (passato remoto).
2. Dialogue as tension
Dialogue reveals character. In Italian narrative, the dashes (—) or French guillemets («») are used instead of speech marks.
- — Perché no?
3. Show, don't tell
Rather than writing "aveva paura" (he/she was afraid), show it:
Le mani le tremavano mentre cercava le chiavi. Il respiro si era fatto corto. Ogni rumore sembrava amplificato. — Her hands were trembling as she searched for the keys. Her breathing had become shallow. Every sound seemed amplified.
4. Pace management
- Short sentences = acceleration, tension, action
- Corse. Cadde. Si rialzò.
- Long sentences = reflection, description, atmosphere
B2 tip: To build suspense, end a paragraph leaving an open question. The reader must want to continue.

Erros frequentes
Avoid repeated 'poi' (then): it reads like a children's story. Use punctuation, adverbs and imperfetto/passato remoto alternation to create rhythm.
Marco era spaventato e non sapeva cosa fare.Il cuore di Marco batteva forte. Le mani non smettevano di tremare. Non riusciva a pensare.'Telling' emotions (era spaventato) is too direct. 'Show' fear through physical and sensory details (show don't tell).
For a background action interrupted by a key event, use imperfetto (camminava) in the main clause and passato remoto (vide) for the sudden action.
— Dove sei? — ha detto lui.— Dove sei? — disse lui.In Italian narrative, verbs of speech (disse, rispose, aggiunse) use the passato remoto, not the passato prossimo (ha detto).
At B2, enrich narration: precise adjectives, varied temporal connectors.
In B2 creative writing, use vicenda/concludersi and lieto fine rather than storia/finire/bene.
