Italian Formal Register in Letters
At B2 level, the formal Italian letter follows strict conventions for register, salutations and closing formulas. Mastering these conventions is essential for professional contexts.
1. Salutation formulas
The fundamental distinction is between Egregio and Gentile:
- Egregio : très formel, respect absolu → Egregio Professore,
- Gentile : formel standard, relations professionnelles → Gentile Dottoressa Bianchi,
- Spettabile : pour les entreprises/institutions → Spettabile Azienda,
2. Subject line
In oggetto: indicates the subject of the letter.
- In oggetto: Richiesta di informazioni sul corso di dottorato
- In oggetto: Conferma appuntamento del 15 marzo
3. Body — essential formulas
- Le scrivo per... — I am writing to you to...
- Le scrivo per richiedere ulteriori informazioni riguardo alla posizione vacante.
- Con la presente si intende... — By means of this letter...
- In riferimento alla Sua lettera del... — With reference to your letter of...
- Allego alla presente... — I am enclosing herewith...
4. Closing formulas
- Distinti saluti — Standard formal (Yours faithfully / sincerely)
- Cordiali saluti — Slightly less formal
- In attesa di un Suo riscontro — Awaiting your reply
- In attesa di un Suo riscontro, porgo distinti saluti.
Note on formal you: In Italian formal letters, pronouns of politeness are capitalised: Le, La, Suo, Sua, Lei — this signals respect for the recipient.

Erros frequentes
Caro Professor Rossi,Egregio Professor Rossi,'Caro' (dear) is reserved for personal relationships. In a formal letter, use 'Egregio' (for men) or 'Gentile' depending on context.
In attesa di una sua rispostaIn attesa di un Suo riscontroIn a formal letter, 'Sua' is capitalised (politeness). Also, 'riscontro' is more formal than 'risposta' in this context.
Ti scrivo per chiederti informazioni.Le scrivo per richiedere informazioni.In a formal letter, use 'Lei' (Le scrivo), not 'tu' (ti scrivo). 'Richiedere' is also more formal than 'chiedere'.
