The trapassato prossimo (past perfect / pluperfect) expresses an action completed before another past action. It is essential for structuring a complex narrative in the past.
Formation
avere / essere in the imperfect + past participle
- aveva fatto → he/she had done
- era andato/a → he/she had gone
- si era accorto/a → he/she had realised

- Il protagonista non sapeva che il suo migliore amico aveva già letto il manoscritto.
→ The protagonist did not know that his best friend had already read the manuscript.
