Adapting tone (Tonfall) and voice to the situation is an essential C1 skill. German clearly distinguishes several style levels.
The three registers:
- Gehoben (elevated): academic texts, official speeches. Ich erachte es als notwendig... (I deem it necessary...)
- Sachlich (neutral): reports, professional emails. Hiermit teilen wir Ihnen mit... (We hereby inform you...)
- Umgangssprachlich (colloquial): blogs, conversations. Das finde ich echt gut. (I think that is really good.)
Adapting to the audience: The same message changes based on the Zielgruppe. For a client: Wir würden uns freuen... (We would be delighted...) For a colleague: Könntest du...? (Could you...?)
The mixing trap: Mixing gehoben and umgangssprachlich in the same text creates dissonance. Register consistency is the golden rule.
The tone you choose reveals your relationship to the reader as much as your content.

Wir würden uns mega freuen. (business letter)Wir würden uns sehr freuen.Mega is slang; sehr is the appropriate register for business letters.
Das Ergebnis war voll okay.Das Ergebnis war zufriedenstellend.Voll okay is colloquial; zufriedenstellend fits the professional register.
