Making a complaint in German requires both formal register and specific phrases.
Expressing dissatisfaction:
- Ich bin nicht zufrieden mit dem Service. (I am not satisfied with the service.)
- Das ist inakzeptabel. (That is unacceptable.)
- Ich möchte eine Erstattung. (I would like a refund.)
Formal complaint phrases:
- Ich möchte mich beschweren über... (I would like to complain about...)
- Könnten Sie bitte den Vorgesetzten holen? (Could you please get the manager?)
- Ich hätte gern einen Umtausch. (I would like an exchange.)
Formal vs. informal register: In a complaint, use Sie and Konjunktiv II (möchte, könnte, hätte) to stay firm but polite. Avoid du and direct commands.
