The plus-que-parfait is essential for advanced past narration, describing events that happened before other past events.
Formation: imperfect of avoir/être + past participle
- Il avait déjà lu ce roman quand le film est sorti. (He had already read the novel when the film came out.)
- Elle était partie avant que je n'arrive. (She had left before I arrived.)
Using plus-que-parfait in book discussion:
- L'auteur avait publié trois romans avant celui-ci. (The author had published three novels before this one.)
- Le personnage avait vécu une enfance difficile. (The character had lived a difficult childhood.)
Narrating with multiple past tenses:
- Imparfait for descriptions: Le héros vivait à Paris.
- Passé composé for actions: Il a rencontré une femme mystérieuse.
- Plus-que-parfait for prior events: Elle avait disparu dix ans plus tôt.
This layering of tenses creates rich, nuanced narratives.
