Dutch collocations are fixed word combinations that native speakers use naturally. At C1 level, knowing the right verb-noun pairing is what separates fluent speakers from advanced learners.
Why collocations matter: You cannot freely swap verbs. You nemen a decision (een beslissing nemen), you do not maken one. You treffen measures (maatregelen treffen), you do not nemen them. These pairings are idiomatic and must be memorized.
Common patterns:
- Verb + noun: een rol spelen (play a role), invloed uitoefenen (exert influence)
- Verb + preposition + noun: een beroep doen op (appeal to), de voorkeur geven aan (prefer)
- Noun + verb: de aandacht trekken (attract attention), schade aanrichten (cause damage)
Formal collocations often differ from informal ones: verantwoording afleggen (formal: to justify/account for) vs. uitleggen waarom (informal: to explain why). Mastering these collocations is essential for sounding natural in professional and academic Dutch.
