Articles: "de" and "het"
Dutch has two definite articles: de and het. This is one of the trickiest parts of Dutch!
- de → used with common gender nouns (~2/3 of nouns)
- het → used with neuter nouns (~1/3 of nouns)
- een → the indefinite article (a/an), same for both
Examples: de stad (the city), het land (the country), de taal (the language)
There is no sure rule — you must learn each noun with its article. But some patterns help:
- Always "de": people (de man, de vrouw), plurals (de landen)
- Always "het": diminutives ending in -je (het huisje)
Countries and nationalities
- Nederland → Nederlands (Dutch)
- België → Belgisch (Belgian)
- Duitsland → Duits (German)
- Frankrijk → Frans (French)
Tip: To say you speak a language: "Ik spreek Nederlands" (no article needed before the language).
