Debating Politely in Chinese
At B1, you learn to challenge views while staying respectful. Two key structures:
连...都/也... (lián...dōu/yě...) — emphasizing even the extreme case
- 连他都同意了。(Lián tā dōu tóngyì le.) — Even he agreed.
- 连最简单的问题都不知道。(Lián zuì jiǎndān de wèntí dōu bù zhīdào.) — Doesn't even know the simplest question.
Polite disagreement phrases:
- 你说得有道理，不过... — You make a good point, however...
- 我理解你的看法，但是... — I understand your view, but...
- 确实如你所说，只是... — Indeed as you say, it's just that...
Conceding gracefully:
- 你说得对，我再考虑一下。— You're right, let me reconsider.
- 这个观点值得思考。— This viewpoint is worth thinking about.
Key tip: Use 不过 or 只是 for soft disagreement — they're gentler than 但是.
Expressões
- 你说得有道理，不过我有不同看法。Acknowledging a point before disagreeing
- 连专家都不确定这个问题。Emphasizing that even experts are unsure
- 我承认这有一定道理。Gracefully conceding part of an argument
- 坚持这个立场有点难以说服我。Explaining why you remain unconvinced
- 我理解你的担忧，但结果可能不同。Validating concern while offering a different outcome
- 这个观点值得进一步讨论。Suggesting continued dialogue
Erros frequentes
连他也不知道。连他都不知道。After 连, the standard particle is 都, not 也. Both exist but 都 is the most common in this structure.
我承认但是你对。我承认你说得对。承认 takes a direct object clause — use 你说得对 as the object, not 但是 (which creates a contradiction).
你的看法有道理不过。你说的有道理，不过我想补充一点。不过 must connect two clauses — it cannot end a sentence without continuing with a new idea.
连简单问题都不会。连最简单的问题都不会。Add a modifier like 最 to show the extreme degree — 连 + bare noun sounds incomplete.
我坚持你是错。我坚持认为你是错的。坚持 in opinion contexts needs 认为 or similar verb to introduce the clause properly.
