Advanced Narration: Dialogue, Descriptions, and Pacing

Writing a short story in Spanish at B2 level requires mastering advanced narration: alternating descriptions, dialogues, and action to create engaging pacing.

Narrative Tenses

  • Pretérito indefinido: punctual actions (Se levantó y salió de la casa.)
  • Pretérito imperfecto: descriptions and context (Llovía y las calles estaban vacías.)
  • Pluscuamperfecto: anteriority (Nunca había visto algo así.)

Dialogues in Spanish

Dialogues use the em dash (—), not quotation marks:

  • —¿Adónde vas? —preguntó María.
  • —No lo sé —respondió él, mirando al suelo.

Varied speech verbs: susurrar, exclamar, murmurar, gritar, añadir

Sensory Descriptions

To create atmosphere, use all five senses:

  • Sight: La luz del atardecer teñía las paredes de naranja.
  • Sound: Se oía el murmullo del río a lo lejos.
  • Touch: La brisa fría le acariciaba la piel.

Narrative Pacing

  • Short sentences = tension, fast action
  • Long sentences = description, reflection, atmosphere

Uitdrukkingen

  • De repente...To introduce a sudden event
  • Sin darse cuenta...To express an unconscious change
  • A medida que pasaban los minutos...To mark the progression of time
  • Lo que no sabía era que...To create suspense
  • Fue entonces cuando...For a pivotal moment in the story
  • Todo cambió a partir de ese momento. To mark a narrative turning point

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Llovía mucho. Él se levantó. Salió de la casa. Caminó por la calle.
Llovía mucho cuando se levantó y salió de la casa. Caminó por la calle desierta.

Avoid overly short, repetitive sentences. Combine them for better narrative rhythm and add descriptive details.

  • «¿Adónde vas?» preguntó María.
    —¿Adónde vas? —preguntó María.

In Spanish, dialogues use the em dash (—), not French or English quotation marks.

  • Él caminó por la calle y vio un gato y el gato era negro y tenía hambre.
Caminó por la calle y vio un gato negro que parecía hambriento.

Avoid excessive repetition of y (polysyndeton). Use relative clauses (que) and adjectives to vary your writing.

  • María dijo: «Tengo miedo.» Juan dijo: «No te preocupes.»
—Tengo miedo —susurró María. —No te preocupes —la tranquilizó Juan.

Vary speech verbs (susurrar, exclamar, murmurar) instead of repeating decir. Use em dashes.

  • De repente se dió cuenta de que todo fue un sueño.
De repente se dio cuenta de que todo había sido un sueño.

Dio has no accent (monosyllable). Also, for anteriority in a past narrative, use the pluperfect (había sido), not the indefinido (fue).
