Nonviolent Communication in Russian

NVC (Ненасильственное общение) uses four steps: Observation → Feeling → Need → Request. Russian grammar supports each step with specific structures.

Step 1: Factual Observation (Наблюдение)

Describe what happened without evaluation. Use когда + verb to frame the situation:

  • Когда ты не отвечаешь на звонки... — When you don't answer calls...
  • Когда я слышу это слово... — When I hear that word...

Avoid: ты всегда, ты никогда (you always, you never) — these are judgments, not observations.

Step 2: Express Feelings (Чувства)

Use Я чувствую + adjective/noun or impersonal Мне + short-form adjective:

  • Я чувствую себя одиноким. — I feel lonely.
  • Мне обидно, когда... — I feel hurt when...
  • Мне тревожно. — I feel anxious.

Step 3: State Your Need (Потребность)

  • Мне важно, чтобы... — It matters to me that...
  • Мне нужно, чтобы... — I need it to be that...
  • Я ценю, когда... — I value it when...

Step 4: Make a Request (Просьба)

Use subjunctive for soft requests:

  • Не мог бы ты...? — Could you possibly...? (masc.)
  • Не могла бы ты...? — Could you possibly...? (fem.)
  • Было бы возможно...? — Would it be possible...?

Key insight: A request (просьба) respects the other person's choice. A demand (требование) does not.

Uitdrukkingen

  • Я чувствую себя... когда...I feel... when... (NVC feeling statement)
  • Мне важно, чтобы...It matters to me that... (stating a need)
  • Не мог бы ты...?Could you possibly...? (soft masculine request)
  • Не могла бы ты...?Could you possibly...? (soft feminine request)
  • Я понимаю, что тебе...I understand that you... (empathy opener)
  • Можем ли мы договориться о...?Can we agree on...? (collaborative request)
  • Я беру ответственность за...I take responsibility for... (accountability)
  • Что тебе сейчас нужно?What do you need right now? (empathic inquiry)

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • Ты всегда делаешь это неправильно!
    Когда это происходит, я расстраиваюсь.

'Always/never' statements (ты всегда/никогда) are judgments. NVC starts with a factual observation using когда + verb.

  • Ты меня не понимаешь.
Мне кажется, что я не могу донести свою мысль.

Blaming the other blocks dialogue. Use an 'I' statement about your own experience instead.

  • Помоги мне! (only command)
Не мог бы ты мне помочь с этим?

In NVC, use requests (просьбы) rather than bare imperatives to preserve the other person's autonomy.

  • Я сочувствую тебе. (empty phrase)
Я понимаю, что тебе сейчас тяжело. Что мне сделать для тебя?

Real empathy acknowledges feelings AND offers concrete support. A hollow phrase does neither.

  • Это твоя вина.
Давай разберёмся, что пошло не так.

Blame language (вина) escalates conflict. Collaborative problem-solving language de-escalates it.

  • Мне нужно что ты позвонил.
    Мне нужно, чтобы ты позвонил.

After мне нужно (I need), use чтобы + past tense to express what you need from another person.
