Expressing Surprise with "Estranhar"
Use estranhar to express that something feels unusual:
- Estranhei o horário dos almoços. (I found the lunch schedule strange.)
- Estranha-se a comida no início. (You find the food strange at first.)
Comparing Cultures with Comparatives
- Em Portugal come-se mais tarde do que na Alemanha. (In Portugal people eat later than in Germany.)
- Os portugueses são tão simpáticos como os italianos. (The Portuguese are as friendly as the Italians.)
Impersonal "Se" for Cultural Norms
The impersonal se describes what people generally do:
- Em Portugal cumprimentam-se com dois beijos. (In Portugal, people greet with two kisses.)
- Come-se muito bacalhau. (A lot of cod is eaten.)
- Fala-se alto nos restaurantes. (People speak loudly in restaurants.)
"Costumar" + Infinitive for Habits
- Os portugueses costumam jantar tarde. (The Portuguese usually have dinner late.)
- Costuma-se beber café depois da refeição. (It's customary to drink coffee after the meal.)
Tip: In Portugal, it is common to greet friends and family with two kisses on the cheek (right cheek first).
