In Portuguese, reporting unverified information requires specific structures to signal uncertainty.

Reporting hearsay:

  • Dizem que o presidente vai demitir-se. — They say the president will resign.

Citing sources:

  • Segundo o jornal... — According to the newspaper...
  • De acordo com especialistas... — According to experts...
  • Conforme noticiado... — As reported...

Expressing doubt:

  • Duvido que isso seja verdade. — I doubt that is true. (+ subjunctive!)
  • Não acredito que tenha acontecido. — I don't believe it happened.

Note: After duvido que and não acredito que, Portuguese requires the conjuntivo (subjunctive), because these express doubt.
