Giving and Understanding Directions

Imperative (Tu form)

To give directions informally, use the imperative:

  • virar — vira
  • seguir — segue
  • atravessar — atravessa
  • continuar — continua

Formal Directions (Você)

For polite/formal directions, use the present subjunctive:

  • Vire à direita. — Turn right.
  • Siga em frente. — Go straight ahead.
  • Continue por esta rua. — Continue along this street.

  • à esquerda — to the left
  • à direita — to the right
  • em frente — straight ahead
  • ao lado de — next to
  • em frente de — in front of
  • atrás de — behind
  • entre — between

    Use à (a + a) before esquerda/direita — the preposition a contracts with the article a

  • Onde está o museu?
    Onde fica o museu?

    For fixed locations, use ficar (fica), not estar — the museum doesn't move

  • Segue em frente de esta rua.
    Segue por esta rua.

    Use por (along/through) for following a street; em frente means straight ahead (no object)

  • Fica a cinco minutos de pé.
    Fica a cinco minutos a pé.

    The expression is a pé (on foot), not de pé (standing up)

  • Estou perdido. Pode ajudar-me?
    Estou perdido. Pode-me ajudar?

    In European Portuguese, the pronoun attaches after the verb with a hyphen in affirmative sentences with pode
