Estar a + Infinitive (Present Continuous)

In European Portuguese, the present continuous is formed with estar a + infinitive:

  • O avião está a descolar. — The plane is taking off.
  • Estou a esperar no portão. — I'm waiting at the gate.
  • Eles estão a embarcar. — They are boarding.

Ter de / Ter que + Infinitive (Obligation)

Both express obligation ("have to"):

  • Tens de mostrar o passaporte. — You have to show your passport.
  • Temos que chegar cedo. — We have to arrive early.

Tip: Ter de is more common in European Portuguese; ter que is more Brazilian.

Passive Voice with Ser

For announcements and airport information:

  • O voo foi cancelado. — The flight was cancelled.
  • Os passageiros são informados… — Passengers are informed…
  • A bagagem foi perdida. — The luggage was lost.

    Estou a esperar no portão.

    European Portuguese uses estar a + infinitive, not estar + gerund

  • Tenho de mostrar o passaporte.
    Tens de mostrar o passaporte.

    Check the subject: tenho = I have, tens = you have — match the verb to the person

  • O voo foi cancelada.
    O voo foi cancelado.

    Voo is masculine — the past participle must agree: cancelado, not cancelada

  • Onde está o portão?
    Onde é o portão?

    For permanent locations use ser (é), not estar — the gate doesn't move

  • A minha bagagem foram perdidas.
    A minha bagagem foi perdida.

    Bagagem is singular (even though it means luggage) — use singular verb and adjective
