Querer / Precisar de / Pensar em + Infinitive

To express travel plans and needs, Portuguese uses these constructions:

Querer + infinitive — to want to:

  • Eu quero viajar para Portugal. — I want to travel to Portugal.

Precisar de + infinitive — to need to:

  • Precisamos de reservar o hotel. — We need to book the hotel.

Pensar em + infinitive — to think about / plan to:

  • Estou a pensar em ir ao Brasil. — I'm thinking about going to Brazil.

Para vs. A with Destinations

Ir para — going to (longer stay, more permanent):

  • Vou para Lisboa em julho. — I'm going to Lisbon in July.

Ir a — going to (short visit, return implied):

  • Vou a Lisboa amanhã. — I'm going to Lisbon tomorrow (and coming back).

Useful Time Expressions

  • na próxima semana — next week
  • no próximo mês — next month
  • daqui a dois dias — in two days
  • de … a … — from … to …

  • Quanto custa o bilhete?How much is the ticket? — Asking about prices

    Use ir para for longer stays; ir a implies a short visit with return

  • Preciso reservar o hotel.
    Preciso de reservar o hotel.

    Precisar requires the preposition de before an infinitive

  • Penso ir ao Brasil.
    Penso em ir ao Brasil.

    Pensar requires the preposition em when followed by an infinitive

  • Quanto custa a bilhete?
    Quanto custa o bilhete?

    Bilhete is masculine — use the article o, not a

  • Vou de férias no próxima semana.
    Vou de férias na próxima semana.

    Semana is feminine — use na (em + a), not no (em + o)
