Irregular Verbs in the Pretérito Perfeito

Some of the most common Portuguese verbs are irregular in the past tense. You need to memorize these forms.

Key irregular verbs

ir (to go): fui, foste, foi, fomos, foram
fazer (to do/make): fiz, fizeste, fez, fizemos, fizeram
ter (to have): tive, tiveste, teve, tivemos, tiveram
ver (to see): vi, viste, viu, vimos, viram
estar (to be): estive, estiveste, esteve, estivemos, estiveram

Example: "No sábado, fui ao campo e vi animais incríveis." — On Saturday, I went to the countryside and saw amazing animals.
Example: "Tivemos um fim de semana maravilhoso!" — We had a wonderful weekend!

Expressing enjoyment

Adorei! — I loved it!
Gostei muito! — I liked it a lot!
Foi incrível! — It was incredible!
