Digital Life: Relative Clauses -(으)ㄴ/는
Korean uses relative clauses before nouns to describe them. This is essential for talking about digital life.
Present relative clause -는 (ongoing/habitual actions):
- 내가 팔로우하는 계정 — the account I follow
- 사람들이 자주 쓰는 앱 — apps that people often use
- 제가 보는 콘텐츠 — the content I watch
Past/completed relative clause -ㄴ/은:
- 어제 올린 사진 — the photo I posted yesterday
- 친구가 공유한 영상 — the video my friend shared
- 받은 알림 — the notification I received
Future/potential relative clause -ㄹ/을:
- 구독할 채널 — a channel to subscribe to
- 다운로드할 파일 — a file to download
Tip: Korean relative clauses always come BEFORE the noun, unlike in English. Practice by describing content you interact with:
- 저는 매일 보는 유튜브 채널이 있어요 — I have a YouTube channel I watch every day.
Veelgemaakte fouten
저는 매일 유튜브 봐요저는 매일 유튜브를 봐요유튜브 is the object of 보다, so it needs the object marker 를. Dropping it sounds incomplete.
온라인 쇼핑몰에 옷을 샀어요온라인 쇼핑몰에서 옷을 샀어요For an action happening at a place (buying), use 에서, not 에. 에 marks a destination or location of existence.
친구가 공유하는 영상을 봤어요친구가 공유한 영상을 봤어요The video was already shared, so use the past relative clause 공유한, not the present 공유하는.
개인 정보를 조심해야 해개인 정보를 조심해야 해요You started in polite 해요체, so finish with 해요, not the casual 해. Keep the politeness level consistent.
화면 시간이 줄이고 싶어요화면 시간을 줄이고 싶어요줄이다 is transitive, so the thing you reduce takes the object marker 를, not the subject marker 이.
