.## Solving Problems Abroad in Japanese

This lesson teaches three patterns for describing incidents, timing, and hearsay — key skills when dealing with travel problems.

〜てしまいました (unfortunately did)

Expresses regret about a completed action. Stronger regret than 〜てしまう (present/future).

  • パスポートをなくしてしまいました。 (I unfortunately lost my passport.)
  • 財布(さいふ)を盗(ぬす)まれてしまいました。 (My wallet was unfortunately stolen.)

〜ところです (just about to / just did)

Describes the timing of an action: before, during, or just after.

  • 今(いま)、警察(けいさつ)に電話(でんわ)するところです。 (I am just about to call the police.)
  • たった今(いま)、届出(とどけで)を出したところです。 (I have just filed the report.)

〜らしい (it seems / apparently)

Reports information heard from others — hearsay evidence.

  • 飛行機(ひこうき)が遅延(ちえん)するらしいです。 (Apparently the flight is delayed.)
  • この辺(あた)りは盗難(とうなん)が多(おお)いらしい。 (It seems there is a lot of theft around here.)

Uitdrukkingen

  • パスポートをなくしてしまいました。I unfortunately lost my passport.
  • 今(いま)、大使館(たいしかん)に連絡(れんらく)するところです。I am just about to contact the embassy.
  • 飛行機(ひこうき)がキャンセルされたらしいです。Apparently the flight was canceled.
  • 警察(けいさつ)に届出(とどけで)を出(だ)さなければなりません。I must file a report with the police.
  • 保険(ほけん)に入(はい)っておいてよかったです。I am glad I got insurance in advance.
  • どうやって対処(たいしょ)すればいいですか。How should I deal with this?

Veelgemaakte fouten

  • パスポートをなくしました。
    パスポートをなくしてしまいました。

While grammatically correct, omitting てしまう loses the nuance of regret. In emergency situations, 〜てしまいました conveys the seriousness and accidental nature.

  • 警察に電話したところです。
    今(いま)、警察(けいさつ)に電話(でんわ)するところです。

した+ところ means just finished calling. する+ところ means about to call. The tense before ところ changes the meaning entirely.

  • 飛行機が遅延するらしいだ。
    飛行機(ひこうき)が遅延(ちえん)するらしいです。

らしい already ends the sentence as a na-adjective-like form. Add です for politeness, never だ after らしい (that would be redundant and ungrammatical).

  • 財布が盗まれてしまいました。
    財布(さいふ)を盗(ぬす)まれてしまいました。

With passive form of theft, use を (not が) to mark the stolen object. The subject (thief) is omitted, and you are the implied victim.

  • どう対処しますればいいですか。
    どうやって対処(たいしょ)すればいいですか。

The conditional form of する is すれば, not しますれば. Do not insert ます into the conditional. Add どうやって for how to deal with.
