Conditional inversion in B2 Italian
Conditional inversion consists of omitting se (if) by inverting the order of the imperfect or past perfect subjunctive. This is an elevated register used in formal speeches, pitches, and professional writing.
Structure
- Se avessi saputo... → Avessi saputo...
- Se fossero venuti... → Fossero venuti...
- Se avessimo investito... → Avessimo investito...
Examples in an entrepreneurial context
- Avessi saputo quanto fosse difficile scalare, avrei cercato più finanziamenti all''inizio.
→ Had I known how difficult it was to scale, I would have sought more funding at the start. (= Se avessi saputo...)
