Direct and indirect object pronouns
Direct object pronouns
They replace a direct object (without a preposition):
- mi (me) : Marco mi invita. (Marco invites me.)
- ti (you) : Ti chiamo stasera. (I'll call you tonight.)
- lo (him/it) : Lo porto io. (I'll bring it.)
- la (her/it) : La conosci? (Do you know her?)
- ci (us) : Ci aspetta al bar. (He's waiting for us at the bar.)
- vi (you pl.) : Vi invito tutti. (I'm inviting all of you.)
- li/le (them) : Li vedo domani. (I'll see them tomorrow.)
Position of pronouns
Pronouns go before the conjugated verb:
"Lo porto io." (I'll bring it.)
With an infinitive, they attach to the end:
"Puoi portarlo?" (Can you bring it?)
Imperative with pronouns
In the informal imperative, the pronoun attaches to the verb:
"Portalo!" (Bring it!)
"Dille di venire." (Tell her to come.)
"Chiamami domani." (Call me tomorrow.)
Indirect object pronouns: mi, ti, gli/le, ci, vi, gli
"Gli ho detto di venire." (I told him to come.)
"Le ho scritto un messaggio." (I wrote her a message.)
Ne — the partitive pronoun
"Ne" replaces a quantity:
"Ne ho ancora tanto." = "Ho ancora tanto tiramisù." (I still have a lot of it.)
"Ne vuoi un po'?" (Do you want some?)
💬 Example: "Ho fatto il tiramisù ieri. Lo porto alla festa e ne offro a tutti." (I made the tiramisu yesterday. I'll bring it to the party and offer some to everyone.)
