Indirect speech (indirekte Rede) is used to report what someone said. In German, it uses dass + subordinate clause or Konjunktiv I (more formal/written).
Simple indirect speech with dass:
- Direct: Er sagt: „Die Nachricht ist falsch."
- Indirect: Er sagt, dass die Nachricht falsch ist. (He says that the news is false.)
More reporting structures:
- Sie meinte, dass man vorsichtig sein sollte. (She thought one should be careful.)
- Man behauptet, dass die Quelle unzuverlässig ist. (It is claimed that the source is unreliable.)
- Laut dem Bericht ist die Information falsch. (According to the report, the information is false.)
Impersonal reporting:
- Es heißt, dass... (It is said that...)
- Es wird behauptet, dass... (It is claimed that...)
- Angeblich ist die Nachricht falsch. (Supposedly the news is false.)
Remember: after dass, the verb goes to the end of the clause.
