Le discours indirect (reported speech) transforms direct quotes: Il dit : « C'est trop bruyant. » becomes Il dit que c'est trop bruyant. Key changes: quotation marks disappear, que introduces the clause.
With questions: Elle demande : « Vous pouvez baisser le son ? » becomes Elle demande si vous pouvez baisser le son. Use si for yes/no questions.
Polite complaints use the conditional: Est-ce que vous pourriez faire moins de bruit ? (Could you make less noise?), Je vous serais reconnaissant(e) de… (I would be grateful if you…).
