Een scriptie verdedigen in academisch Engels
Op C1-niveau betekent een scriptie verdedigen meer dan alleen een standpunt poneren: je moet het onderbouwen, bezwaren voorzien en er zorgvuldig op reageren.
Structuur van een sterk argument:
1. Claim (bewering): je duidelijke, precieze standpunt 2. Evidence (bewijs): gegevens, citaten, feiten 3. Warrant (rechtvaardiging): de logische verbinding tussen bewijs en bewering 4. Concession + Rebuttal: de beperking erkennen en vervolgens weerleggen
Academische hedging: Je beweringen nuanceren versterkt je geloofwaardigheid juist.

- It could be argued that...
- The evidence points towards...
Tegenargumenten verwerken: Negeer ze niet. Ze voorzien toont aan dat je het onderwerp beheerst.
Veelgemaakte fouten bij een scriptieverdediging
- My thesis proves that remote work is always better. → My thesis suggests that remote work tends to increase productivity in knowledge-intensive sectors.
Proves en always zijn te absoluut in een academische context. Gebruik suggests, tends to of in certain contexts.
- I agree with the criticism but my point is still right. → While I concede the merit of this objection, I maintain that the core argument holds because...
De informele formulering past niet bij een mondelinge verdediging. Gebruik een formele concessie-weerleggingsstructuur.
- Lots of evidence shows this is true. → A substantial body of evidence supports the claim that...
Lots of is informeel. Gebruik a substantial body of, a growing body of of considerable evidence.
- This proves my hypothesis is correct. → This finding is consistent with / lends support to the hypothesis that...
Prove is te stellig in de wetenschap. Gebruik liever support, corroborate of be consistent with.
- The evidence undeniably proves my thesis beyond question. → The evidence strongly supports my thesis.
Zeggen dat bewijs onweerlegbaar is, sluit het academische debat af. Gebruik genuanceerde termen zoals strongly supports.
- While critics may disagree, but my argument stands. → While critics may disagree, my argument stands.
While en but zijn allebei concessieve verbindingswoorden; samen gebruiken is grammaticaal redundant.
