Je bronnen correct citeren is een fundamentele ethische en academische verplichting. Twee citatiesystemen domineren Engelstalige publicaties:
APA (American Psychological Association) — gebruikt in de psychologie, sociale wetenschappen en het onderwijs:
- In de tekst: (Smith, 2021, p. 45) of Smith (2021) argues that...
- In de literatuurlijst: Smith, J. (2021). Title of work. Publisher.
MLA (Modern Language Association) — gebruikt in literatuur, kunst en geesteswetenschappen:
- In de tekst: (Smith 45) of Smith argues that...
- In de literatuurlijst: Smith, John. Title of Work. Publisher, 2021.
Formules voor bronvermelding
Om een citaat of idee elegant te integreren:

Veelgemaakte fouten bij academisch citeren
- As Smith (2019) says that the results are significant. → As Smith (2019) argues, the results are significant.
Je kunt "as", dat al een toeschrijving inleidt, niet combineren met "says that". Kies één structuur.
- As it is cited in the work of Brown... → As Brown demonstrates... / Brown shows that...
De onpersoonlijke passieve constructie klinkt stroef. Gebruik liever een actief werkwoord voor bronvermelding.
- Many researchers believe that climate change is real. → A growing body of researchers maintains that...
"Many researchers" is vaag. Gebruik in academisch schrijven preciezere kwantificeringen.
- This idea comes from Jones et al (2020). → This idea is drawn from Jones et al. (2020).
"Comes from" is te informeel. Gebruik nauwkeurige academische werkwoorden zoals "is drawn from" of "originates in".
