Estar + gerund (present continuous)
To describe what is happening right now, Spanish uses estar + gerund:
Forming the gerund
- -ar verbs → -ando: trabajar → trabajando
- -er/-ir verbs → -iendo: comer → comiendo, escribir → escribiendo
Example: "Estoy trabajando." → "I am working."
Example: "Mi jefe está hablando por teléfono." → "My boss is talking on the phone."
Estar conjugation (present)
- yo → estoy
- tú → estás
- él/ella → está
- nosotros → estamos
- ellos/ellas → están
Simple present vs continuous
In Spanish, these two tenses have distinct meanings:
- Trabajo de lunes a viernes. → I work Monday to Friday. (habitual)
- Estoy trabajando ahora. → I am working right now. (in progress)
Use the simple present for routines and the continuous for actions happening at this moment.
Example: "Normalmente imprimo los informes por la mañana, pero ahora estoy asistiendo a una reunión." → "I normally print the reports in the morning, but right now I am attending a meeting."

- Estoy revisando el correo.To say you are checking email
