Taking Care of Yourself in Japanese

Health advice in Japanese uses these patterns:

〜た方(ほう)がいい (you should)

Give advice to do something.

  • もっと野菜(やさい)を食(た)べた方がいいですよ。 (You should eat more vegetables.)

〜ない方(ほう)がいい (you should not)

Advise against doing something.

  • 夜(よる)遅(おそ)くまでスマホを見(み)ない方がいいです。 (You should not look at your phone late at night.)

〜ために (in order to)

Express the purpose of an action.

  • 健康(けんこう)のために、毎日(まいにち)運動(うんどう)しています。 (I exercise every day for my health.)

These patterns are essential for discussing wellness routines, giving and receiving health advice, and talking about lifestyle choices.

Expressions

  • 〜た方(ほう)がいいですよGive friendly health advice
  • 〜ない方(ほう)がいいですAdvise someone against something
  • 健康(けんこう)のためにState a health-related purpose
  • 体調(たいちょう)が悪(わる)いSay you feel unwell
  • 〜を心(こころ)がけるSay you try to be mindful of something
  • ストレスがたまるExpress that stress is building up

Common mistakes

  • 野菜を食べるた方がいい。
    野菜を食べた方がいい。

た方がいい uses the past tense (た-form), not dictionary form + た. 食べる → 食べた.

  • 夜遅く寝るないほうがいい。
    夜遅く寝ない方がいい。

ない方がいい uses the negative form directly. 寝る → 寝ない (not 寝るない).

  • 健康にために運動する。
    健康のために運動する。

ために attaches with の (not に) after nouns. 健康のために.

  • ストレスをたまっています。
    ストレスがたまっています。

ストレスがたまる is intransitive. Use が (not を) as the subject marker.

  • もっと休むの方がいいです。
    もっと休んだ方がいいです。

方がいい requires the た-form of the verb. 休む → 休んだ方がいい (not 休むの方).
