Punctuation Mastery

Spanish punctuation has specific rules that distinguish it from English:

  • Inverted marks: Spanish is unique with its opening ¡! and ¿?, mandatory even in long sentences where the exclamation does not start at the beginning
  • Semicolon vs colon: the punto y coma separates related but independent clauses; dos puntos introduce an explanation, enumeration, or direct speech
  • Em dash vs hyphen: the raya (—) frames parenthetical clauses and introduces dialogue in novels; the guion (-) joins compound words
  • Comma: never between subject and verb in Spanish (Mi hermano, trabaja is incorrect), unlike English in some cases
  • Ellipsis: always three dots, never more, followed by a capital letter if a new sentence begins
  • Quotation marks: Spanish prefers angular quotes (« »), then double (" "), then single (' ') in hierarchical order
  • Apostrophe: virtually nonexistent in modern Spanish, unlike English

Expressões

  • Entre comillasIn quotation marks (also figurative)
  • Punto y aparteLet's change the subject (figurative)
  • Sin punto ni comaWithout stopping, in one go
  • Poner los puntos sobre las íesTo dot the i's and cross the t's
  • Hasta el punto de que...To the point that...
  • Punto y seguidoLet's continue on the same topic

Erros frequentes

  • Mi hermano, trabaja mucho
    Mi hermano trabaja mucho

Never place a comma between subject and verb in Spanish, even for a pause

  • Que hora es?
    ¿Qué hora es?

The opening question mark (¿) is mandatory in Spanish; omitting it is an error

  • Dijo que: «vendrá mañana»
    Dijo que «vendrá mañana»

Do not use a colon after 'que' — it is redundant with the conjunction

  • Había perros, gatos, y pájaros
    Había perros, gatos y pájaros

Spanish does not use the Oxford comma (before y/o in enumerations)

  • Es decir; que no vendrá
    Es decir, que no vendrá

After 'es decir' use a comma, not a semicolon
