The Art of Punctuation in Russian
Russian punctuation is largely rule-governed but allows significant stylistic freedom at the literary level. Mastery means knowing the rules well enough to bend them purposefully.
The Russian Dash (Тире)
The dash is far more prominent in Russian than in English. Key uses:
1. Subject-predicate with noun: Москва — столица России. (no verb needed) 2. Before direct speech: — Ты готов? — спросил он. 3. Expressing contrast: Я пришёл — а её не было. 4. After enumeration before generalisation: Книги, картины, музыка — всё это наполняло его жизнь.
Asyndetic Sentences (Бессоюзные предложения)
Russian can join clauses without conjunctions, using commas, semicolons, colons, or dashes instead:
- Comma (simultaneous): Светало, птицы запели.
- Semicolon (independent but related): Тучи сгустились; дождь казался неизбежным.
- Colon (explanation): Он молчал: слова были лишними.
- Dash (unexpected result): Он открыл дверь — комната была пуста.
Parenthetical Words (Вводные слова)
Always set off by commas in Russian — unlike English:
- Конечно, безусловно, разумеется — of course
- Во-первых, во-вторых — firstly, secondly
- По-видимому, по всей вероятности — apparently, probably
Ellipsis (Многоточие)
Russian uses ellipsis richly for:
- Trailing off, hesitation: Я не знаю... может быть...
- Dramatic pause before revelation: И вдруг...
- Omission in quotations
