Business ethics in Russian
Discussing ethics in a business context requires formal vocabulary, the ability to express obligations and prohibitions, and constructions for hypothetical reasoning.
Expressing obligation and prohibition
- Сотрудники обязаны соблюдать кодекс поведения. — Employees are obliged to follow the code of conduct.
- Запрещается принимать подарки от контрагентов. — Accepting gifts from contractors is prohibited.
- Необходимо раскрывать конфликт интересов. — It is necessary to disclose conflicts of interest.
Hypothetical and conditional reasoning
- Если бы компания соблюдала стандарты, скандала не было бы. — If the company had observed the standards, there would have been no scandal.
- При наличии нарушений следует немедленно сообщить руководству. — In the event of violations, management must be informed immediately.
Reporting and accountability structures
- понести ответственность за нарушение — to bear responsibility for a violation
- привлечь к ответственности — to hold accountable
- нанести ущерб репутации — to damage the reputation
- принять меры в отношении — to take measures regarding
Tip: The verb нести in combinations like нести ответственность (bear responsibility) and нести убытки (incur losses) is essential in formal business and legal Russian.

Erros frequentes
Компания нарушила этические нормы и получила штраф.Компания нарушила этические нормы и была оштрафована.Получила штраф is informal. In formal/legal contexts use была оштрафована (was fined) — the passive participle form.
Он несёт ответственность перед нарушение.Он несёт ответственность за нарушение.Нести ответственность за что-то requires за + accusative: за нарушение (for the violation), not перед + accusative.
Запрещено брать взятки от клиентов.Запрещено брать / получать взятки от клиентов.Both брать and получать are correct here, but взятку (singular accusative) is more natural than the plural when referring to the practice in general.
Прозрачность — это важное для бизнеса.Прозрачность — важное условие для бизнеса.Это важное is an incomplete predicate. Specify what it is: важное условие (an important condition), важный принцип, etc.
Сотрудника уволили по причине нарушение.Сотрудника уволили по причине нарушения.По причине (due to / because of) requires the genitive case: нарушения, not the nominative нарушение.
Компания должна избегать от коррупции.Компания должна избегать коррупции.Избегать (to avoid) takes the genitive case directly without от: избегать коррупции.
