The Subjunctive in Concessive Clauses
When debating post-truth, Portuguese uses concessive clauses extensively. These require the subjunctive after embora, ainda que, conquanto, and se bem que.
Embora os dados sejam claros, muitos recusam aceitá-los. — Although the data is clear, many refuse to accept it.
Ainda que se prove o contrário, a narrativa persiste. — Even if the opposite is proved, the narrative persists.
Argumentative Discourse Markers
Advanced argumentation requires precise connectors: porém (however), todavia (nevertheless), não obstante (notwithstanding), por conseguinte (therefore).
Os factos são inequívocos; porém, a opinião pública diverge. — The facts are unequivocal; however, public opinion diverges.
Distinguishing Fact from Opinion
At C2, you must articulate the difference between a fact and an opinion with precision. Portuguese distinguishes constatar (to ascertain/note a fact) from opinar (to express an opinion) and alegar (to allege).
Constata-se que a desinformação aumentou. — It is ascertained that disinformation has increased.
Alega-se que os media são tendenciosos. — It is alleged that the media are biased.
