Idiomatic Expressions in Polish

Polish idioms (frazeologizmy) are fixed phrases where the meaning cannot be deduced from individual words.

Key concepts:

  • Literal vs. figurativedosłownie vs. w przenośni
  • Collocation — words that naturally co-occur (kolokacja)
  • Fixed expression — a set phrase that cannot be modified (utarte wyrażenie)

How idioms work:

Polish idioms often derive from historical, cultural, or agricultural contexts.

  • Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy — Not my circus, not my monkeys (not my problem)
  • Lać wodę — to pour water (to ramble, to say nothing of substance)
  • Mieć coś na końcu języka — to have something on the tip of your tongue
