Euphemism and Dysphemism in Polish
Euphemism (eufemizm) replaces an uncomfortable, taboo, or offensive word with a milder, more socially acceptable expression.
Dysphemism (dysfemizm) does the opposite — deliberately using a harsher or more offensive word to create emphasis or irony.
Common euphemism categories in Polish:
- Death: odejść (to depart), zasnąć na wieki (to fall asleep forever)
- Illness: mieć problemy zdrowotne (to have health problems)
- Aging: osoba w dojrzałym wieku (a person of mature age)
- Dismissal: rozstać się z firmą (to part ways with the company)
Why euphemisms matter at C1:
A C1 speaker must recognize when language is being "softened" or when an author is deliberately harsh.
- Euphemisms appear heavily in political and corporate language
- Dysphemisms signal criticism, irony, or informality
- The same concept can have neutral, euphemistic, and dysphemistic forms
