Giving Warnings and Instructions: -지 마세요
The negative imperative -지 마세요 is used to tell someone not to do something. It is polite and direct — perfect for giving safety advice, warnings, and online security instructions.
How to form it
Simply attach -지 마세요 to the verb stem (no vowel or consonant rules apply here):
- 클릭하다 → 클릭하지 마세요 (Don't click)
- 열다 → 열지 마세요 (Don't open)
- 공유하다 → 공유하지 마세요 (Don't share)
The verb stem stays the same regardless of whether it ends in a vowel or consonant.
Casual form
Drop 세요 for informal speech:
- 클릭하지 마 (Don't click — informal)
Use in cybersecurity contexts
This structure is extremely useful for giving security advice:
- 비밀번호를 공유하지 마세요. (Don't share your password.)
- 모르는 링크를 클릭하지 마세요. (Don't click on unknown links.)
- 개인 정보를 입력하지 마세요. (Don't enter personal information.)
