At C2 level, choosing the right word from among 類義語 (synonyms) is what separates good Japanese from masterful Japanese. The 使い分け (distinguishing usage) of near-synonyms requires understanding 語感 (word nuance). Consider the difference between 見る、眺める、観る、覧る — all mean to look, but each carries distinct nuance: casual seeing, gazing leisurely, watching attentively, viewing formally. Japanese is rich in 同音異義語 (homophones): きく alone can be 聞く (hear), 聴く (listen carefully), 訊く (ask), or 効く (take effect). The 文脈 (context) determines meaning. Many words are 多義語 (polysemous): 甘い means sweet but also naive, lenient, or optimistic. 適切な表現 (appropriate expression) depends on register, audience, and situation. The 微妙な違い (subtle differences) between 言葉遣い (word choices) like 嬉しい vs 喜ばしい, or 悲しい vs 哀しい, reveal depth of feeling and literary awareness. Building rich 語彙 (vocabulary) and understanding its ニュアンス (nuance) is the ultimate mark of C2 mastery.
