Geopolitics and Diplomacy

Japanese diplomatic and political language uses a formal, indirect register that reflects the cultural value placed on harmony and face-saving.

Diplomatic Language

Japanese official discourse employs specific patterns:

  • 〜に対して遺憾の意を表明する — to express regret regarding~ (diplomatic understatement for strong disapproval)
  • 〜を強く非難する — to strongly condemn~ (the harshest diplomatic language)
  • 〜について深い懸念を表明する — to express deep concern about~

Strategic Use of Passive Voice

The passive in diplomatic Japanese creates distance and avoids direct attribution:

  • 合意に達された — an agreement was reached (who agreed is left ambiguous)
  • 検討が行われている — examination is being conducted (no agent specified)

International Relations Vocabulary

Understanding news about Japan requires these key terms:

  • 安全保障理事会 — UN Security Council
Japan-US Alliance

Japanese diplomatic language is a masterclass in strategic ambiguity — the most powerful statements are often the most understated.

Expressões

To express regret (diplomatic disapproval)
To take resolute measures
To violate sovereignty
To seek a peaceful resolution
To promote multilateral cooperation
The principle of non-interference

Erros frequentes

悪い (bad) is a childish moral judgment. Use 国際法に反する (violates international law) for precise, legal language.

したい (want to) is inappropriate. 取り沙汰されている (is being discussed) maintains journalistic objectivity.

遺憾 (regret) is deliberately NOT an apology in Japanese diplomacy. It expresses displeasure without admitting fault.

制裁 uses 科す (to impose), not あげる (to give). This is a fixed collocation in political Japanese.

Treaties and alliances use 締結する (to conclude/sign), not 作る (to make). This is formal diplomatic register.
