Talking About a Book in Japanese

Discussing books requires narrating past events, expressing nostalgia, and describing ongoing changes using advanced tense forms.

Past Progressive: ていた

  • ていた — describes what was happening: 主人公は自分の過去と向き合っていた。 (The protagonist was confronting their past.)

Experience: たことがある

  • たことがある — "have experienced": 村上春樹の小説を読んだことがある。 (I have read a Murakami novel.)

Nostalgia: ものだ

  • ものだ — recalls past habits with nostalgia: 子供の頃はよく図書館で本を読んだものだ。 (I used to read books at the library as a child.)

Directional Change: ていく / てくる

  • ていく — change moving away/forward: 物語はだんだん暗くなっていく。 (The story gradually gets darker.)
  • てくる — change approaching the present: 最近、文学への関心が高まってきた。 (Recently, interest in literature has been growing.)

  • ていたTo describe ongoing past actions
  • たことがあるTo express past experience
  • ものだTo express nostalgia for past habits
  • ていくTo describe change moving forward
  • てくるTo describe change approaching now
  • 伏線が回収されるTo say foreshadowing is resolved

Erros frequentes

  • 小説を読むことがある。
    小説を読んだことがある。

    たことがある requires past tense (読んだ), not dictionary form (読む).

  • 子供の頃は本を読むものだ。
    子供の頃は本を読んだものだ。

    Nostalgic ものだ uses past tense (読んだ), not present (読む).

  • 物語はだんだん暗くなっていった。
    物語はだんだん暗くなっていく。

    When describing an ongoing trend use ていく (present). ていった is for a completed change.

  • 関心が高くなってきた。
    関心が高まってきた。

    For abstract concepts, use 高まる (to rise/heighten), not 高くなる.

  • 主人公が過去を向き合っていた。
    主人公は過去と向き合っていた。

    向き合う takes と (face with), not を. Also は for topic marker.
