.## Negotiating in Japanese

Japanese negotiations favor indirect, humble language. This lesson covers three advanced polite patterns for business discussions.

〜ていただければ幸いです (I would appreciate if)

An extremely polite request form used in formal negotiations.

  • 条件(じょうけん)をご検討(けんとう)いただければ幸(さいわ)いです。 (I would appreciate it if you would consider the conditions.)
  • 見積(みつ)もりをお送(おく)りいただければ幸いです。 (I would appreciate it if you could send the estimate.)

〜ないかと思います (I was wondering if)

A tentative, indirect suggestion — softer than a direct proposal.

  • 少(すこ)し値下(ねさ)げできないかと思(おも)います。 (I was wondering if a small price reduction might be possible.)
  • 納期(のうき)を延(の)ばせないかと思います。 (I was wondering if the delivery date could be extended.)

〜次第です (it depends on)

Expresses that something depends on a condition.

  • お返事(へんじ)次第(しだい)です。 (It depends on your reply.)
  • 予算(よさん)次第で、条件(じょうけん)を変(か)えられます。 (Depending on the budget, we can change the conditions.)

Expressões

  • 条件を提示する(じょうけんをていじする)To present conditions
  • もう少しお値引きいただけませんかCould you give us a bit more of a discount?
  • こちらとしては〜次第ですOn our side, it depends on...
  • ご検討いただければ幸いですI would be grateful if you could consider it
  • 双方にとって良い結果を目指しましょうLet us aim for a good outcome for both sides
  • 折り合いをつける(おりあいをつける)To reach a compromise

Erros frequentes

  • 条件を提示します
    条件(じょうけん)を提示(ていじ)いたします

In formal negotiations, use humble form いたします instead of plain polite します

  • 値引きしてください
    お値引(ねび)きいただけませんか

ください sounds demanding; いただけませんか is more appropriate for polite requests in business

  • 検討してもらえれば幸いです
    ご検討(けんとう)いただければ幸(さいわ)いです

Use the honorific prefix ご and いただく (humble) instead of もらう in formal business Japanese

  • 私は譲歩できないと思います
    こちらとしては譲歩(じょうほ)しかねます

しかねます (find it difficult to) is softer and more professional than できないと思います for declining

  • 合意次第連絡します
    合意(ごうい)でき次第(しだい)、ご連絡(れんらく)いたします

次第 requires the verb stem (でき次第), and the sentence needs honorific ご and humble いたします
