From Latin to Modern Italian
Italian descends from Vulgar Latin, the spoken variety used across the Roman Empire. As the empire fragmented, regional varieties diverged. Dante's adoption of the Tuscan dialect in the "Divina Commedia" (1320) established a literary standard that would eventually become modern Italian. Key phonological shifts include the lenition of intervocalic consonants (Latin "vita" stayed, but "ripa" became "riva") and the palatalization of Latin /k/ before front vowels ("centum" became "cento").
Loanwords and Regional Influences
Italian absorbed waves of borrowings: Germanic words during the Lombard period ("guerra," "guardia"), Arabic terms via Sicily ("magazzino," "arancio"), French influence during the Enlightenment ("giornale," "moda"), and today massive English imports ("computer," "marketing"). Each region also contributed: Venetian gave "ghetto" and "arsenale," Neapolitan gave "pizza" and "mozzarella."
Neologisms and Word Formation
New Italian words form through compounding ("parola macedonia" like "fantascienza" from "fantasia + scienza"), derivation with suffixes ("-ismo," "-izzare"), and calques that translate foreign concepts word-for-word ("grattacielo" from "skyscraper"). The Accademia della Crusca monitors and debates these linguistic innovations.
